Best Mid Laners of Season 14

Posted: 09 Sep 2024

Greetings! I'm Gozen, a seasoned player and coach with experience in multiple roles, having achieved Challenger rank across three different positions over several seasons. For those who are new to my content, I've been investing my time coaching LoL players for the past five years. In today's article, we'll be exploring the strongest Mid Lane champions to climb the ranked ladder, with the current meta of League of Legends in 2024.

According to statistics, the Mid Lane champions that are best to climb up with in Season 14 are, Akshan, Ahri, Anivia, Aurelion Sol, and Kassadin. Let's speak of the ups and downs of these champions now!

Akshan

Our beloved champion with the weirdest passive in the game, is of course on top of the charts! Mobility, invisibility, burst damage, easy to rotate with, and a long-range ultimate that can execute; What else do you need?

Advantages

  • Invisibility and high speed make him great for rotating around the map.
  • Unique passive which makes every game winnable.
  • Has a decent wave clear.
  • Good at small trades and all in both.

Disadvantages

  • Hard to learn and play.
  • Not optimal for every draft because it's an AD champion.
  • Heavily snowball-reliant.

Ahri

The Vastayan Fox has been a blast on pro play and soloQ games since her update, with the new items; She got even stronger! She is not the highest sustain mage in the game, yet due to her mobility , the potential burst and her capability to snowball the game she has a high win rate for quite a while!

Advantages

  • Goes amazing with the current items in the game.
  • Outstanding wave clear and lane phase.
  • Useful at every stage of the game and doesn't fall behind easily.

Disadvantages

  • Team dependent and therefore can't do much if she is on the losing team.
  • Doesn’t scale as well as other champions on the list.
  • Hard to position yourself properly.

Rune

Anivia

The Ice Bird, personally, I find her the hardest mid-lane champion to play against. She can disengage and make you regret your game plan in the blink of an eye. Heavily recommended due to her sustain unlike other mage champions, and her capability to even face-tank the damage of assassins and stay alive.

Advantages

  • Great scaling potential.
  • Has burst and consistent damage both.
  • Egg Passive which makes her really strong later on and grants her survivability in the early stages as well.
  • Good wave clear.

Disadvantages

  • Needs time to get strong, and doesn't do much early.
  • Immobile.
  • Doesn't have a high range and she needs enemies to walk up to deal damage.

Build and Skill Priority

Rune

Aurelion Sol

Another broken champion that Riot couldn't fix and make it balanced after the changes to its skillset. Aurelion Sol is indeed, devourer of galaxies and your soloQ experience.

Advantages

  • Outstanding scaling potential.
  • Good wave clear.
  • Goes great with the meta items.
  • Capable of kite and team fight in a way unlike any other mage.

Disadvantages

  • Needs time to unlock its strength.
  • Really weak against champions with crowd control.
  • Hard to play, and needs practice to use W properly.

Build and Skill Priority

Rune

Kassadin

There is nothing to speak of about Kassadin, but that he is in a great place with the new items. This seasoned legend has been back to being meta!

Advantages

  • One of the best scaling champions in the game.
  • Almost guaranteed to win if he can reach level 16.
  • Mobility is unlike any other champion.

Disadvantages

  • Needs way too much time and resources to get strong.
  • Completely useless in early combat and can’t attend any fights.
  • Gets countered really easily and has almost no positive matchups.

Best Mid Lane Champions to Carry Low Elo in 2024

The ideal supports for climbing below Emerald are a little bit different from the normal list. As Mid Laners need to have insane scaling or higher early-game mobility to keep up with the constant fighting there is in the low elo. Yet keep in mind that the best Mid Laners mentioned are still viable options and would work amazingly in skilled players hands in lower tiers as well.

According to the statistics provided, the highest win rate Mid Lane champions in tiers below Emerald are Katarina, Diana, Veigar, Garen, and Annie. Let's start talking about how to efficiently use them and why they are strong in low elo!

Katarina

Jumping around dealing tons of damage and the illegal combo: Press all buttons until the fight ends, works really well in low elo! Katarina with her new user friendly design (as you can fail a combo yet still do decent damage) combined with her snowball potential, has always been like she is right now for the low tiers of play.

Advantages

  • Outstanding snowball potential with skills resetting after every kill participation(Except R).
  • Capable of building almost anything and dealing damage.
  • Good at bursting enemy carries down.

Disadvantages

  • Not the best wave clear, especially in the early stages.
  • Can get bullied by many champions in the lane.
  • Weak against crowd control.
  • Heavily depends on snowballing.

Why is Katarina Good in Low Elo?

  • She is basically one of the best picks for low elo due to her outstanding snowball potential and capability to teleport around with skill resets. If she gets a lead; the game is pretty much won.
  • As there are many combats in lower tiers of play, picking Katarina and involving in those fights has a high success rate.

Diana

My favorite champion of choice, Diana never falls behind. This almost impossible to kill in lane champion is known for her burst damage and compatibility to currently strong AP items.

Advantages

  • Good wave clearing.
  • Decent scaling potential.
  • Hard to lose lane as Diana due to her skillset.
  • A good amount of burst damage

Disadvantages

  • Cant disengage, if you are going in there is no way out.
  • Really difficult to play against disengage skills (Eg. Janna).
  • Needs items too much, and has low base damage.

Why is Diana Good in Low Elo?

  • Well, the only serious weakness of Diana is that she can't disengage. Who needs to disengage in low elo anyway? If you are in, you are in the zone.
  • Has a great area of effect damage which makes her for consistent team-fighting environment in lower tiers of play.
  • Doesn't have counter matchups worth speaking of, therefore can be picked blind.

Veigar

Veigar has always been strong since they updated his passive to stack on enemies as well. Recommended for especially players whom are new to the game and wants to climb higher while learning how to play mages.

Advantages

  • Infinite scaling.
  • Health percentage damage (With his R).
  • Cage(E) skill that is really difficult to play against for most of the champs.
  • Great gank setup and wave clear.

Disadvantages

  • Has the least damage in early levels.
  • If you fail your E skill, then the champion becomes completely vulnerable.
  • Difficult to predict damage when you are going for an all-in, you will only know whether you win or not once the fight is over.

Why is Veigar Good in Low Elo?

  • Every fight, even if you lose grants you valuable stacks which makes you stronger, and every game goes past 25 minutes which means Veigar has a high chance to be 2 items (The second one always being Rabadon).
  • Low elo players often walk directly on your cage, making your E skill extraordinarily valuable in those games.

Garen

Ah yes, what is the Demacian from the top lane doing at Mid? Destroying the enemies, thats what he’s doing. This champion has an amazing success rate in mid lane at low tiers, due to one simple fact: He’s really simple to play while many mid lane champions are difficult!

Advantages

  • Good wave clear.
  • Strong against mages.
  • Low counter matchups and great burst damage.

Disadvantages

  • Can get kited pretty much by any ranged champ.
  • Hard to chase mobile champions.
  • Can only kill one champion at a time.

Why is Garen Good in Low Elo?

  • He is basically strong against almost every mage, destroying their game plan. In low tiers, players often don't know how to scale and play against Garen when he’s at mid.
  • Tank bruisers always have higher value compared to other types in low tiers due to their easy to understand game plan.

Annie

This little girl has always been a problem in tiers below Emerald, due to her simplistic design with lots of burst and crowd control. And the new items, have made her even stronger! Make sure to try her out if you are a mid laner below Emerald, looking to climb higher!

Advantages

  • Easy to play.
  • Tons of burst damage.
  • Has a good amount of movement speed with her E.

Disadvantages

  • Immobile.
  • She has too low range to work except flashy plays.
  • Hard to control the Tibbers(R).

Why is Annie Good in Low Elo?

  • Enemies always run at you, so a short-range burst damage mage has quite a high value as her only big weakness is the range!
  • Really simple design, easy to farm with, and poke your laner.
  • Good movement speed to run away and chase enemies which happens all the time!
