Crypto and esports are teaming up in 2025, completely changing the old way fans used to interact with esports and creating new revenue streams.
While crypto exchanges are partnering with tournament organizers to fuel the explosion of crypto betting platforms, this new alliance is gearing up to expand the esports field.
Crypto Companies Transform Esports Sponsorships
Coinbase recently made headlines by partnering with Riot Games as the exclusive crypto exchange for League of Legends and VALORANT esports events. The partnership launches at the VALORANT Champions Tour Masters in Toronto this June. Fans will get features like the "Econ Report" for VALORANT and "Gold Grind" for LoL, analyzing how in-game currency affects team strategies.
Coinbase puts it plainly: "As esports redefined what it means to be an athlete, crypto is rebuilding the financial system to make economic freedom possible for all." This partnership makes sense because both communities seem thirsty for digital innovation.
Early 2025 has seen numerous strategic crypto sponsorships across esports. Q1 data from Esports Charts shows significant growth, with multiple organizations signing fresh deals.
Crypto Betting Takes Center Stage
Crypto has found its perfect match in online esports betting. Dozens of platforms now accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other assets for betting on famous tournaments.
Recent industry reports show crypto betting platforms have increased their esports betting volumes by over 40% in the past year. These platforms now cover more than 20 different esports titles, with CS2, VALORANT, and League of Legends leading the way.
Right now, most seasoned players have turned to online betting sites, as not many high street betting shops offer eSports betting. Crypto gambling sites are also popular with eSports fans, as these modern options are more likely to have a wider range of eSports betting markets than more traditional online sportsbooks.

In motorsport-related esports, crypto exchanges have been particularly active. Gate.io recently replaced Bybit as Red Bull Racing's sponsor after Bybit's $1.5 billion hack in February 2025, proving the volatility that still exists in this field.
Beyond Simple Sponsorships
The Coinbase-Riot partnership hints at bigger innovations ahead. As Coinbase noted, "It's a partnership that will allow for future innovation in the sports partnership sphere. We will explore opportunities to improve the fan experience through Web3 tech."
Such a vision is already becoming a reality. Riot Games recently announced they'll allow gambling and betting sponsors for LoL and VALORANT esports teams starting in 2025, though with careful oversight.
Looking at other sports partnerships provides clues about esports' future. Tether's $50 million investment in Juventus is trying to combine blockchain, AI, and biotech with sports. Similarly, Aston Martin's F1 team partnered with Coinbase in an innovative deal paid entirely in stablecoins. We'll likely see these innovations in esports soon.

Crypto in esports isn't just sponsorship money anymore – now those two fields are merging with shared audiences and values. With esports viewership expected to exceed 640 million globally by the end of 2025 and crypto adoption keeping its growth, this partnership is set for an explosive future.
