How to rank up fast in League of Legends

Posted: 11 Sep 2024

Whether you’re someone who’s stuck in elo hell with bad MMR, or someone who’s just starting their ranked climb, ranking up in solo queue can be a challenging task. No matter what you do, sometimes it feels impossible to win those juicy league points and keep climbing through the ranked ladder. Even though there is no secret formula to climbing, there are methods you can use in your games to win more games and rank up fast.

Don’t play a lot of different champions

Keeping your champion pool tight is essential to maintaining consistent performances in ranked. While it may seem tempting to play a champion you’ve had fun with on ARAM, playing your best champions every game is much better because your experience on them will often make the difference between winning and losing. Knowing all of the ins and outs of your main champion is the biggest reason why one-trick ponies have an easier time climbing the ladder than other players.

Play the meta

While Riot does attempt to achieve perfect balance among all of League’s 160+ champions, the nature of the game forces some champions to be more powerful than others. However, every single patch has around 10 champions that statistically win more games than others. Naturally, this is something you can use to your advantage by playing the most OP champions in every single meta. If you keep following the meta trends while you’re playing, you’re bound to see your MMR increase and your account will rank up fast as a result.

Get an elo boost

Getting a booster to play on your account is, without a doubt, the simplest way to escape elo hell and rank up fast. Even though you'll have to pay for this method, it's extremely efficient and requires no effort because the booster will rank up your account instead of you. Nowadays, there are plenty of boosting providers that will carry out the task efficiently and affordably while keeping your account safe.

Learn macro

Understanding minion manipulation is undoubtedly the #1 thing that separates a skilled player from an average one. In the past, numerous Challenger players have expressed that a better understanding of macro helped them climb the ladder quickly and become really good at the game. Concepts like freezing, rebounding, slow pushing, and fast pushing are just some of the basic minion control strategies you’ll need to understand in order to climb to high elo.

Dodge bad champion selects

If you were to ask any high elo player what’s the main trick they’ve used to reach the highest ranks in League, dodging will certainly be one of the main answers. Dodging is extremely potent because the first dodge of the day only costs 3LP and it doesn’t lose you any MMR. Generally speaking, you should dodge all games in which you have a player complaining about being autofilled, games in which your team comp is outdrafted, or those in which you’re playing against a hard counter in the lane.

Buy a smurf account

If your LP gains are really low and you’re struggling to climb on your main account, the best option is to start your ranked journey anew on a new account. Leveling up takes too much time and effort which is why your best bet is to buy a smurf account with a fresh MMR. This will allow you to play a new set of placement games with untouched MMR, enabling you to climb divisions with ease as you’ll gain more LP per win.

Roam more

A common mistake low elo players make is to get tunnel visioned inside of their lane and forget to roam around the map and make plays to help their team get ahead. Roaming can be used to escape a bad matchup by helping your teammates and getting out of lane or to extend your existing advantage by punishing other laners while you’re ahead. Additionally, roaming is extremely effective in the solo queue because of the lack of communication between players which you can use to your advantage.

Learn to control your tilt

After losing a game and tilting, League of Legends players often have a tendency to queue into another game. Unfortunately, requeuing after losing is an extremely bad habit that leads to loss streaks which end up ruining your MMR and making it extremely difficult to climb. Instead of jumping into another game after a loss, you should take a break and do something else that will help you relax because you’ll play much better if you’re not tilted from the previous game.

Know the abilities and playstyles of the champions

Since there are over 160 champions in League, especially if you’re a new player, understanding all of their abilities can be a tough task. However, knowing what the champions do and understanding their playstyles is crucial to beating them and outplaying them. Even if you’re someone who has a limited champion pool, you should at least have a fundamental understanding of the champions’ abilities and the basic interactions.

Know to play at least 1 champion in every role

In recent years, Riot changed the game in a way that allows players to play their preferred role most of the time. However, you’re still bound to be autofilled every now and then, and in those situations, you should be prepared to play any role that you’re assigned to. Since your teammates won’t always allow you to play your favorite lane, you should always have at least 1 pocket pick for every lane that you can play on a high level.

Use the loading screen to plan the game ahead

Generally, in the process of the game starting and throughout the duration of the loading screen, most players take a bathroom break or scroll their phone. That’s completely reasonable, but there is a way to use the loading screen to your advantage by planning ahead. If you’re a laner, you should think about potential trade patterns you want to adopt against your opponent or items you’ll build to counter the enemy team. On the other hand, if you’re a jungler, you can plan your pathing route and analyze the best ganking targets before the game starts.
