Lol Arena Returns: Everything you need to know
Posted: 11 Sep 2024
Ever since its inception, League of Legends Arena has remained a fan-favorite game mode whose only issue is its temporary availability.
The reason that makes Arena stand out is that, unlike Summoner’s Rift, Arena removes the stressful laning process by immediately throwing you into battle against other 2-person teams.
However, the newest iteration of League of Legends Arena introduces numerous gameplay changes that add a new layer of complexity, nuance, and entertainment.
LoL Arena 3.0 release date
Arena 3.0 is returning to your League of Legends client with the introduction of patch 14.9 which drops on May 1st.
Riot has expressed the desire to keep Arena as a permanent addition to League of Legends, but they still feel like the game mode has some evolving to do.
However, this time around, Arena is sticking for much longer than in any previous iteration.
Instead of only being available for a patch or two, Arena is sticking for the entirety of the 2nd ranked split, meaning that it’s planned to be up for the whole of 2024.
This increased duration of availability will allow Riot to make final adjustments to this game mode before eventually adding it to the game permanently.
Gameplay updates
Increased lobby size

Undoubtedly the biggest change of the new Arena is the increased lobby size, doubling the previous number by going from 8 to 16 players.
Essentially, it’s going from 2v2v2v2 to 2v2v2v2v2v2v2v2. This positively affects the gameplay in numerous ways, most notably by keeping the action fresh and unpredictable.
Because of the increase in lobby size, you’re less likely to run into the same teams that might have previously frustrated you because of their champion selection or build.
Keep in mind that the increase from 8 to 16 players doesn’t affect the number of banned champions, with the number of bans staying at 8 as every team gets to ban a single champion now rather than every player.
Additionally, the game length also stays the same, with the average match duration ranging from 15-20 minutes, depending on how long your team stays in the game.

Ranked updates

Before kickstarting ranked with a new season, Riot has decided to introduce a one-patch preseason as players get used to the changes that have taken place in Arena 3.0.
For the most part, the ranked system stays the same apart from a few adaptations to the new lobby size increase.
The biggest change regards premade parties, as you won’t be able to play ranked with a full premade lobby.
In the new Arena, you can queue up with 1-8 premades when playing ranked, which means that at least half of the lobby will be filled with random teams.
Theoretically, you can queue up a full premade party with 15 other players, but in a casual match which won’t affect your ranked Arena MMR.
Prismatic items

Prismatic items are one of the biggest novelties when it comes to the reworked Arena, designed to make games less repetitive and game states less stale.
These items are juggernauts in terms of the stats and active/passive bonuses they provide you, being much stronger than Legendary items in the game.
Simply put, getting the right Prismatic item at the right time with the right champion can be game-changing due to how powerful these items are. However, the acquisition process of these items naturally balances their power.
You’re occasionally randomly presented with a Prismatic item wheel where you can choose 1 of 3 Prismatic items.
This system is akin to the augment distribution system in the sense that it naturally balances the power level because of randomization.
Apart from getting Prismatic items randomly between rounds, you can also craft them yourself by using the new Anvil item system.
Anvils

Anvils are another new gameplay aspect that reshapes how item purchasing and building champions work in the Arena.
Essentially, Anvil is a consumable that presents you with a choice between three random upgrades to your champion whose quality depends on the Anvil tier you’ve purchased.
There are three Anvil tiers, each providing a unique upgrade to your champion:
- Stat (750 gold) - provides a random stat boost in the form of permanent low-rarity Augments
- Legendary (2000 gold) - grants a random Legendary item of a specific class
- Prismatic (3750 gold) - grants you a completely random Prismatic item
Stat Anvils
Firstly, Stat Anvils are a perfect addition to the Arena gameplay given that they provide you with something to spend all of your excess gold on.
Instead of infinitely re-purchasing Teemo hat juices, you can now invest in your permanent champion stats if you’re ahead in the game and have too much gold.
Legendary Anvils
Unlike Stat Anvils which provide stat boosts, Legendary Anvils reveal a selection of permanent Legendary items which you can add to your build.
These Anvils are the least risky ones to purchase, as you’re guaranteed an item that boosts your champion’s game plan as the item selection is customized to fit your build.
Prismatic Anvils
These Anvils are the ultimate dice roll, giving you a selection of 3 Prismatic items that can positively impact your game, or completely ruin it.
Given the steep cost of Prismatic Anvils, they’re a high-risk, high-reward option which makes them such an exciting addition to the dynamic world of the Arena.
Team HP and distribution
The new, revamped Arena 3.0 also introduces changes in terms of team HP and the damage it takes when you lose a round.
Instead of starting with 20 HP like before, each team starts the match with 100 HP. Naturally, given that the HP pool is larger, the HP reduction after a round loss is also more precise and consistent as well.
This doesn’t mean that teams get tankier though, as it’s just as easy to get knocked out if you’re doing poorly and consistently losing.
Reworked augments
Visual updates
Lobby visual update

Naturally, the Arena’s lobby appearance also changes with the new update given that there are more players to accommodate on the battlefield.
The lobby has been changed from a small floating rock to a massive circular island truly living up to the name of Arena, as it resembles a gladiator battlefield.
It still embraces a circular shape, with separate areas for each team that are smaller than before given the increase in the number of rosters.
Additionally, one of the lobby’s standout visual additions is the team crest engravement (eg. Team Scuttle, Team Krug) in your team area.
Furthermore, the lobby’s visuals have completely shifted from the traditional look, embracing the Empyrean theme that celebrates the skin line’s return with an array of new skins.
Specific visual elements have been redesigned to fit this theme, such as the shop, surrounding team banners, and the floating energy that orbits around the battlefield.
Lobby scouting

Scouting the opposition has always been somewhat tricky in the Arena, especially since there wasn’t a specific option that displayed your upcoming opponents.
This completely changes with Arena 3.0. With the newest revamp of the Arena, when tabbing, you will get a scouting overview of your current opponents.
The scouting allows you to get all of the key information about the team you’re facing, including their items, spells, and augments.
By consistently scouting your next opponents, you will always stay one step ahead in terms of items and augments you should prioritize obtaining.
On top of that, you also gain insight into the opponents’ current form by getting a glimpse into their matchup history, revealing their recent win/loss record.
Map changes

Playing on different maps each round is one of Arena’s strong suits and it’s a key aspect that keeps gameplay fresh and exciting.
To further enhance this strength, Riot is adding a brand new map to the existing roster. Meet Bloom Bridge, a brand-new combat surrounding that changes the 2v2 dynamic and forces you to adjust your strategy accordingly.
The map is split into three platforms divided by an impassable pond in the middle.
You can't walk between platforms unless you're crossing over the flower in the centre, which can only be traversed when it's in full bloom.
Otherwise, the only method of going from one platform to another is by using blast cones and portals which can easily leave you exposed to a counter-attack.
Overall, this map will be enjoyed by ranged champions and team comps whose main strengths lie in poking and ranged harass.
Loading screen changes

The final element of the UI that has been appropriately updated and improved is the loading screen.
The reworked loading screen rocks a completely new design, using a layout that divides the screen into 4 teams on each side while highlighting your team in the middle.
You can match and compare your team comp to others by clicking on the team of your choice, which changes the highlighted teams and also reveals further information on your opponents such as their mastery level.
