Pathfinder Apex Legends Guide: Abilities, Stats and How to Play

Posted: 16 Jul 2026

Pathfinder is the friendly robot everyone loves, and he's one of the most fun legends in the game to move around with. He's a mobility skirmisher built around a grappling hook that flings you across the map and a zipline gun that moves your whole squad. If you like fast, flashy movement and getting to places other legends can't, he's a perfect fit.

The timing on this guide is great, too. Pathfinder is getting a buff in the Season 29 Split 2 patch, landing around June 23, 2026, and it's a big one for his grapple. We'll cover what's changing and how to make the most of it.

Here's everything you need: his full kit, his stats, his upgrades, and how to actually play him well. This is written for Season 29, Overclocked, which runs from early May to early August 2026.

Who is Pathfinder?

Pathfinder is an MRVN, a cheerful robot who booted up alone in an abandoned lab with no memory of who built him. He joined the Apex Games, on Mirage's suggestion, hoping the fame would help him track down his creator. That search has been his whole story since day one.

People adore Pathfinder. He's relentlessly upbeat, he's got an expressive little emoji face, and he loves a good high-five. He's been one of the most iconic legends in Apex since launch, and his grappling hook comes straight from Titanfall, where the whole movement style started.

Pathfinder's class

Pathfinder is a Skirmisher. That class gives him a few useful perks. He can look at a neutral Care Package to reveal its best item for your squad, even if another team already grabbed it. When he knocks an enemy, he gets an extra ability charge and heals 50 HP. And his teammates get a sprint speed boost when they run toward him. All of this rewards his fast, aggressive movement style.

Pathfinder's abilities

Here's his full kit and the numbers that matter.

Passive: Insider Knowledge

Pathfinder's passive ties into his Skirmisher perk. Every Care Package you scan knocks 10 seconds off your Zipline Gun cooldown, up to four packages for a 40-second reduction. If your ultimate is already charged, scanning a package fully refreshes it.

There's a small trick here worth knowing: fire your zipline first, then scan the package. That way the scan immediately refunds your charge instead of being wasted.

Tactical: Grappling Hook

This is the heart of his kit. You fire a hook at any solid surface within 21 meters, and it pulls you toward it. The ring on your crosshair turns blue when something's in range. You can also grapple onto enemies to yank yourself toward them, and onto ziplines and deployables like a Loba shop. With good timing, you can swing off the anchor and keep your momentum for huge distance.

Here's the big news: the Season 29 Split 2 buff gives the grapple two charges on a flat 20-second cooldown. That replaces the old system, where the cooldown changed depending on how far you grappled. Two charges and a predictable timer make it way more reliable, especially in a fight, since you're no longer guessing when you'll get it back.

One thing to watch: Revenant's silence cancels your grapple, so be careful around him.

Ultimate: Zipline Gun

Your ultimate creates a rideable zipline, up to around 200 meters long, that anyone can use, including enemies. Riders move 66% faster than they do on the map's built-in ziplines, and you can have up to four of your ziplines out at once. The base cooldown has long been 2 minutes, and the Split 2 buff both speeds up how fast the zipline deploys and shortens that cooldown.

The exact new cooldown number isn't fully confirmed until the patch goes live, so check the notes, but the direction is clear: faster ziplines, more often.

Best upgrades for Pathfinder

Pathfinder picks one upgrade at level 2 and another at level 3 each match, and the Split 2 patch reshuffles these.

At level 2, your options become Field Research, which gives you the full set of Recon perks including threat vision while aiming, and Ringmaster, which gives you the full set of Controller perks like a ring overshield and an Evac Tower. Both are strong, but Field Research and its ring awareness usually wins games.

At level 3, the patch swaps the old Grapple God upgrade for Landing Gear, which gives you better air control and quick recovery when you drop from heights. Since the double grapple charge is now baked into his base kit, you lose nothing from that change.

Since the exact upgrade lineup is finalizing with the patch, double-check it in game once Split 2 is live.

Where Pathfinder stands in the meta

Let's be honest about where he's been. Heading into this buff, Pathfinder was sitting around a 2.2% pick rate, which is low, and most tier lists had him in B-tier, sometimes A. He's mechanically rewarding and great for rotations, but two things held him back: a big hitbox that gets punished in accurate lobbies, and that clunky old grapple cooldown.

The Split 2 buff is aimed right at the cooldown problem. Respawn flat out said he'd fallen to his lowest point of the year and wanted to bring him back. With the flat 20-second double grapple, expect his pick rate and viability to climb after the patch. Just don't expect him to become the best legend in the game, because that hitbox is still a real weakness.

How to play Pathfinder

Here's how to get real value out of him.

His playstyle in one sentence

Pathfinder is a mobility skirmisher. His job is to reposition fast, grab high ground, take angles other legends can't reach, and move his whole squad around the map with ziplines. He's all about being where the enemy doesn't expect you.

Best situations for him

He's great in both pubs and ranked, and he's long been a competitive staple for fast, safe rotations. He's even more valuable in Season 29, since Tridents and a lot of the map ziprails got removed, which puts more weight on legend movement. His value goes up on bigger maps and in late-game rotations.

Using the grapple

Grapple hops are your bread and butter. Fire at the ground in front of you, jump as it connects, and tilt your camera up to launch forward. It's perfect for closing gaps or clearing obstacles.

Keep your momentum. Slide out of every landing, use slopes, and bunny-hop the exit to carry your speed. Release the rope late enough to build speed but early enough to arc where you want. To take height, aim at a wall or beam above you to launch onto rooftops in one motion, but pick your landing spot first since you're exposed on the way up.

In a fight, slide before you grapple for better mid-air aim, and you can even grapple a downed enemy to drag them in for a quick finish. With two charges now, you can chain grapples in a fight far more reliably than before.

Using the zipline

Use your zipline for team rotations, escapes, and grabbing high ground. The golden rule: never fire one straight into a fight, because enemies can ride it too. Place escape lines ahead of time, even if your team doesn't use them right away.

You can grab and jump off any zipline to launch yourself upward, and late in the game it's smart to pre-place a few lines to build a web of rotation options. And remember to fire your zipline before scanning a Care Package so you instantly get the charge back.

Best weapons and loadout

Build for close to mid range to match his movement. A solid setup is an AR like the R-301 or Flatline paired with a close-range finisher like the R-99 or a Peacekeeper. The Peacekeeper is especially nasty fired mid-grapple-hop. Skip sniper-only loadouts, since they don't fit his style. For the current best picks, see our Apex weapons tier list.

Best teammates

Pathfinder's kit fits with just about anyone, and slower, non-mobile legends get the most out of his ziplines. Caustic or Wattson can trap the end of one of your ziplines. Octane's jump pad plus your grapple covers absurd distance. And a Wraith portal right after a zipline makes for an escape that's almost impossible to follow. In this meta, a trio of Pathfinder for rotation, a support like Conduit or Lifeline, and a fragger works well.

Positioning and engagements

Use the grapple to take angles and height instead of swinging in straight lines across open ground, since your arc is easy to track when you do that. Hit the enemy from an off-angle, then reposition. Bank your Care Package and beacon scans to keep your ultimate up.

Common mistakes to avoid

The big ones: whiffing or wasting your grapple and getting caught with no movement, swinging in predictable straight lines where everyone can shoot you, riding your own zipline head-first into a fight, killing your momentum by holding the rope too long, and picking long-range guns that don't suit his close-quarters style.

Ranked tips

Use your ring scans to stay ahead of rotations, and use ziplines to move early and safely rather than for flashy aggression. Note that Split 2 puts Diamond and above into solo queue, so play self-sufficiently. And respect that accurate lobbies punish his hitbox, so fight from cover and angles rather than swinging out in the open.

Counters to know

Revenant is his hardest counter, since his silence cancels the grapple and locks it out. Beyond that, good players will hold angles that deny you anchor points, pressure you right after you land a grapple before the cooldown comes back, and lead their shots on your predictable swing arcs. Fighting near tall structures is risky for the enemy, though, since it hands you free vertical escapes.

On the flip side, Pathfinder beats slow, grounded squads and teams that lean on map tools to rotate. He simply gets where he needs to be faster than they can.

The bottom line

Pathfinder is a high-mobility, high-skill legend who's about to get a lot more reliable. With the Season 29 Split 2 buff landing around June 23, his biggest weakness, that awkward grapple cooldown, is being fixed with a flat 20-second double charge. If you shelved him, this is the patch to pick him back up.

He still has that big hitbox, so he's not a hide-behind-your-abilities legend. But if you enjoy fast movement, clever rotations, and outmaneuvering people, few legends are more satisfying. Grapple smart, place your ziplines ahead of time, and use your speed to fight on your terms.
