Key Strategies for Winning in League of Legends in 2025

League of Legends remains one of the most popular and competitive games in esports in 2025. It has more than 150 million users registered worldwide, who play thousands of matches every day on different servers, all aiming for the same thing: victory over the opposing team.

If you want to do this, you can't just rely on luck and hope that your opponents make mistakes. You have to use up-to-date and accurate strategies instead. To support you, we've put together the most effective strategies and tips that can help you achieve your goals.

In-Game vs Real Rewards

League of Legends offers a rewarding pastime, but only inside the game. No matter how much time you put in, your progress, ranks, and unlocks stay strictly virtual. You can’t cash them out or turn them into actual cash. If you enjoy tracking progress and getting rewarded for consistency, exploring platforms that give back might be worth exploring.

Many online casinos now offer rewards for loyal players without any deposit needed. You can receive a costless extra, often in the form of free spins or cashback, that potentially can get better the longer you stick around. Sure, League is fun, but if you're looking for something that pays off beyond the screen, such benefits might be the next level.

Master Your Role and Champion Pool

To be successful in League of Legends, you must first choose which role to take on and try to master that role. The most common mistake beginners make is selecting different roles for each match and trying to master them all at once. However, it is not possible to become an ‘ultimate master’: ideally, you should select one role, gain enough experience in it to feel comfortable with it, and then try to learn a second role that you can use as a “backup”. Never try to master more than two roles. Otherwise, you will never understand any of them.

When making a choice, consider whether you will take on the Top, Jungle, Mid, ADC, or Support role, and try all champions that fit these roles. Ideally, you should master at least three champions that will allow you to fulfil your role, as this way you will be as little affected by meta changes as possible. To give you a general idea, we list below the generally accepted meta champions for these roles as of May 2025, but keep in mind that this list is subject to change at any time.

Top

Fiora, Aatrox, Sett, Pantheon

Jungle

Bel'Veth, Kha'Zix, Naafiri, Xin Zhao

Mid

Cassiopeia, Zed, Naafiri, Anivia

ADC

Jinx, Kai'Sa, Jhin, Lucian

Support

Janna, Fiddlesticks, Lulu, Nami

Prioritise Objectives Over Skills

Getting a kill in League of Legends is extremely exciting, and taking on an enemy champion can be an adrenaline-filled experience. Unfortunately, this is also a mistake that beginners make quite often. Most beginners focus on getting as many kills as possible throughout the match. However, this is a game where you win by controlling the objectives. Who wins is not determined by the number of kills, but by the number of objectives controlled. In this context:

  • Towers, Dragons, Rift Herald, and Baron Nashor offer critical advantages that can give your team the edge. They should always be your priority.
  • It is not necessary to attack every enemy champion you see. Sometimes retreating or running away gives you the opportunity to control a critical objective.
  • If you have to give up a tower or a perfect kill opportunity to get the Dragon and Baron buff, don't hesitate to do so. This buff can even turn a losing match in your favour.

This doesn't mean that you shouldn't fight enemy champions at all. But you should think twice before entering a fight and always prioritise objective control.

Map Awareness and Vision Control

League of Legends is a game where the more places you can see on the map, the more advantages you will have. No matter which lane you're in, seeing where the enemy is attacking will allow you to easily move to those areas and take control of the situation. There is an easy but often overlooked way to do this: using wards. Placing a ward at river entrances, jungle paths and near important objectives increases your vision and allows you to keep track of enemy movements at all times.

You can use control wards and Oracle Lens to prevent your opponent from doing the same. This will limit their field of vision and weaken their control over the map. Of course, keep in mind that in order to do all this, you need to keep one eye on the mini-map at all times. The more you increase your map awareness, the better your chances of winning the match.

Master Minion Wave Management

Try as much as possible not to leave your minions on their own. This requires you to do more than just walk alongside them. Minions come in waves, and controlling these waves can make them more effective on the battlefield. “Slow pushing” and “freezing” are two strategies you can use for this purpose. The former is about creating waves strong enough to easily destroy enemy towers, while the latter is about “freezing” minions near towers, forcing enemy champions to move away from their safe zones. When used correctly, these strategies will help you capture objectives or create ‘gank’ opportunities.

  • For slow pushing, clear the caster minions behind the enemy minion wave. Do not touch the melee minions and let them clash with each other. Do the same thing in the next wave. After a few waves, your minion group will have a lot of casters and few melees, and you will be able to destroy enemy towers more easily thanks to your little army of caster minions.
  • For freezing, keep the enemy minion wave slightly bigger than your own and keep the wave somewhere between your tower and the enemy tower. This forces the enemy champion to take unnecessary risks and creates ganking opportunities for you.

These tactics take time to master, but once you do, you can do amazing things by controlling minion waves.

Adapt Your Item Builds to the Situation

This is also a common mistake: beginners use the advice on the internet for their item builds and don't think about changing them in any way. However, there is no one ‘amazing’ build that will work in every match and in every scenario. You need to be as flexible as possible. For example, if you are taking more magic damage than usual, you should switch to an item that can help you counter it. Understanding the problem and finding the item that can solve it, and switching to it, can bring you victory in 1v1 fights. Don't insist on picking and using a certain item build just because it's in the meta or recommended by too many people. Being able to understand and adapt to the demands of the match is what separates skilled players from the rest.

And of course, practice: like everything else, League of Legends takes time to master. Take your time and don't despair if you fail. Top-tier players also made a lot of mistakes until they mastered the game, but they learned from their mistakes and never gave up. Finally, don't forget to have fun: the main purpose of playing League of Legends is to have fun with your friends, not to get angry and yell at the monitor (and strangers on the internet).
